This spring has been a tricky one for the release of new games, with several high-profile releases (including most recently The Last of Us Part II) being delayed in light of the challenges that the coronavirus pandemic has presented. However, one of April’s biggest releases, Gears Tactics, seems to be primed and ready for its debut later this month by officially completing development.
During its most recent Inside Xbox presentation, Microsoft confirmed that Gears Tactics has officially gone gold on PC ahead of its release later this month. “Going gold” is the term generally used in the games industry to indicate that a game has completed development and is beginning the process of certification and shipping to release. In addition to the finalization of Gears Tactics‘ PC release, The Coalition also detailed that work is continuing on the Xbox version of the game, which is currently planned to arrive later this year. While presumably that will include Xbox One, it’s unclear just yet whether that means the game also could arrive on Xbox Series X, or at least be playable on the system with Series X enhancements.

Alongside this news, Microsoft also shared that Gears Tactics, which is being built as a “PC-first experience,” will also be bundled free with the purchase of select Intel processors. Specifically, customers that purchase an Intel Core i5 CPU (or higher) will receive a copy of the game for free. Microsoft also shared some new artwork to commemorate the game’s development being completed with protagonist Gabe Diaz, as part of a new line of T-shirts.
From what we’ve seen of the game so far, Gears Tactics is aiming to take the acclaimed shooter franchise into a different direction by adapting it to turn-based, XCOM-style gameplay. Given the focus of the series on cover-based shooting, so far it seems like a natural fit and interesting direction for a new Gears game. Story-wise, we know that Gears Tactics will take place 12 years before the events of the original Gears of War, and will primarily focus on Gabe Diaz, the father of Gears 5‘s main protagonist, Kait Diaz.
